The risks of NOT using fossil fuels

One of the most frequent questions I get is: “What got you started on this issue of fossil fuels?”

On this week’s Power Hour, I tell the story in detail.

A big part of the story is that in my research on a project studying John D. Rockefeller I learned two crucial points about energy:

  1. Cheap, plentiful, reliable energy is fundamental to human flourishing.
  2. Cheap, plentiful, reliable energy is extremely hard to produce.

These two points led me to understand the unique role the fossil fuel industry has played and continues to play in the amazing, unprecedented standard of living we enjoy.

As I discuss on the podcast, when most people hear about proposed restrictions on the fossil fuel industry, they feel something positive; since “Big Oil” is supposed to be bad, it is assumed that only positive things can come from restricting it. But once I understood what a unique role Big Oil played in my life, I became aware of the risks of not using fossil fuels.

Whenever people talk about the risks of continuing to use fossil fuels, it’s worth asking them what they think of the risks of not using fossil fuels.
